Overcome Your Anxiety

Learn practical tools and strategies to help you reduce anxiety.

  • Do you fear being out of control?
  • Do you worry excessively about many things?
  • Do you avoid social situations?
  • Do you have recurring thoughts that refuse to go away?

Then it’s possible you may suffer from an anxiety.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body’s natural reaction to stressful situations (otherwise known as the fight-flight-or-freeze response). When we’re faced with potential danger, our bodies respond to that threat with our mind, body, or both. Fear is a similar emotional response; it’s the body’s immediate reaction to a real or perceived threat. It’s our way of anticipating future danger.

Living like that can be exhausting, and it can lead to depression if you don’t get on top of it early.

Anxiety doesn’t discriminate; any person at any age can suffer with this disorder. You may feel isolated; that no one feels the way you do, but you’re not alone. An estimated 3 million people aged 18 years or older in Canada experience some level of anxiety. Most commonly, general anxiety disorder.

What Are the Symptoms of Anxiety?

Anxiety shows up in our lives in different ways. It might be a social situation, a challenging life event, or a family or relationship issue. There are several reasons you may experience anxiety, many out of your control.

  • Genetics
  • Stressful or traumatic situations (a death, loss of job, etc.)
  • Early childhood development and personality
  • Environmental factors

It manifests itself in both mental and physical ways, including:

  • Constantly worrying or panic over minute issues
  • Think up worst-case scenarios over every plan and/or problem
  • Viewing each situation as threatening, even when it’s not
  • Problems dealing with uncertainty
  • Being indecisive due to fear of making the wrong decision
  • Unable to let go of worries, no matter how insignificant
  • Restlessness; you’re unable to relax
  • Feeling tense or on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating or often losing train of thought

Physical symptoms include:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Sweating
  • Muscle tension or aches
  • Nausea, diarrhea, or irritable bowel syndrome

Though it may seem impossible to live with anxiety, there are ways to cope so you don’t have to continue living in constant fear. With the proper treatment, you’ll learn how to manage your anxiety. It’s a battle you can win.

How Can anxiety be Treated?

When everything seems overwhelming, it’s tempting to try quick fixes, such as alcohol, drugs, or scrolling social media. Doing that may help calm your anxiety in the moment, but eventually, it creates its own problems.

In most cases, you can’t just walk away from a situation or challenge that’s causing you to feel anxious. If you worry that attending therapy to talk about it may make you look or feel weak, you bottle it up and it only gets worse over time; but there are ways to express your fears in a healthy way. It is entirely possible to get the help you need.

Counselling is one of the most common treatments for general anxiety disorder. As a counsellor that specializes in anxiety disorders, I help clients in the Montreal area understand the causes of their anxiety and arm them with an “anxiety management toolkit” to help them cope and move forward.

I offer a safe, judgment-free environment so you can feel safe to open up and talk about your concerns with your anxiety.
