Anger Management Counselling Montreal

Practical Anger Management Therapy in Westmount, Montreal

Accepting new clients in-person and online.

Anger is a normal response to stress, frustration, or perceived threat. It becomes a problem when it is frequent, disproportionate, or difficult to control. When anger starts affecting your relationships, your work, or your ability to think clearly in the moment, it is worth looking at what is driving it.

As a therapist in Westmount, I work with clients who are dealing with anger that has become disruptive, whether that means explosive reactions, ongoing irritability, or a pattern of conflict that keeps repeating. I also work with clients who have been directed by the court to attend anger management counselling. In each case, the focus is the same: understanding what maintains the pattern and building practical skills to manage it.

When Anger Becomes a Problem

Most people who seek help for anger have been dealing with it for a long time. The reactions may have started as occasional flare-ups and gradually become a default response. Over time, the consequences build: strained relationships, workplace difficulties, poor decision-making, disrupted sleep, or a persistent tension that does not ease.

Anger issues can present as:

  • Explosive or disproportionate reactions to minor triggers
  • Ongoing irritability or a short fuse
  • Verbal aggression or intimidating behaviour
  • Difficulty calming down once anger starts
  • Conflict at home, at work, or in social situations
  • Resentment or frustration that builds over time
  • Anger related to parenting, exhaustion, or boundary issues
  • Physical tension, clenching, or restlessness

These patterns often become automatic. You may recognise the behaviour after the fact but struggle to interrupt it in the moment. That is where therapy helps.

How Anger Management Therapy Works

Therapy is not about suppressing anger or learning to hide it. The aim is to understand the physiological and psychological processes that drive reactive behaviour and develop strategies that give you more control over how you respond.

In the first session, we review your history with anger, the situations that tend to trigger it, and the impact it is having on your life. From there, we build a plan that focuses on the specific patterns that need to change.

Ongoing sessions are practical. You will learn to recognise the early signs of escalation, examine the thought patterns and assumptions that fuel reactive behaviour, and practise communication and regulation skills you can use in real situations. The work is present-focused. Past experiences may come up when they help explain current patterns, but the emphasis is on practical change.

Court-Ordered Anger Management

I work with clients who are required by the court to attend counselling for anger-related concerns. We begin with an initial assessment to understand the situation and clarify what is expected. Sessions then focus on the behaviours and conditions that led to the requirement.

After completing the required number of sessions and demonstrating genuine engagement in the process, I can provide a letter confirming your participation. The number of sessions depends on your circumstances and what the court has specified.

Please note: I provide individual counselling only. I do not run anger management classes or group programs.

What to Expect

Anger patterns that have been building for years do not resolve overnight, but they do respond to consistent work. The skills you develop in therapy are designed to be applied in your daily life, and that is where the real change takes hold.

Some clients see meaningful progress relatively quickly once they begin recognising their triggers and applying new strategies. Others benefit from longer-term work, particularly when anger is tied to deeper patterns of stress, resentment, or unresolved conflict. We assess progress together and adjust the approach as needed.
